September 25: National Day of Tribute to the Harkis

On a national day of remembrance, all public buildings and structures are to be paved to the colors of France, i.e. they must be decorated with the tricolor flag, the national emblem. Festooning is a symbolic act, and every September 25, it is carried out to pay tribute to France. tribute to the Harkis, Moghaznis and other members of the suppletive forces who served France during the Algerian war, between 1954 and 1962.

The word "Harkis (from the Arabic "harka" = movement) has become a generic term to designate all Algerian people who supported France and joined civilian or military formations. The latter worked alongside the French army to secure villages and take part in certain strategic operations. At the end of the war, the Harkis were considered traitors to their country, and those who were unable to flee Algeria were subjected to violent reprisals.

Since 2001, France has been engaged in a reparation and recognition policy of the tragedy suffered by the Harkis and their families. Introduced in 2003, the day of homage to the Harkis is an expression of the duty of remembrance to those who have earned the nation's gratitude, and to younger generations. It is also part of an objective approach to the transmission of history.

In September 2021, on behalf of France, the President of the Republic officially asked for forgiveness "from the abandoned combatants and their families who have suffered camps, prison and denial".
